The Firestation was established in August 1991 as a not-for-profit workshop and gallery space, with 8 individual artist studios. Members are united in their love of printmaking, and their enthusiasm in promoting works on paper in the community. The Firestation is run by its volunteer Committee of Management, a paid part-time Workshop Manager, and many volunteers.

Annual Summer Salon and Open Day

Firestation Artists-in-Residence with Dave from the Fire Services Museum

Yesterday the Firestation held the opening of our annual Summer Salon, announced the winners of the competition (below) and also held our Open Day with the help of a 1940s Fire Engine and volunteer in historic uniform from the Fire Services Museum of Victoria.

The competition was kindly judged by Tim Abdallah, Head of Art for Menzies Auctioneers. His comments are in italics below.

Summer Salon Prize Winners:

1st Prize (Voucher donated by Neil Wallace Art Supplies)
Bronwyn Rees
'Nanango the Long Paddock'
Conveyed a strong sense of the landscape. A touch of whimsy (the cows) and a nice use of the panoramic format. A classic etching.

2nd Prize (Credit voucher for class at the Firestation Print Studio)
Trudy Rice
'Big Trees from Below'
I like the way the textures and surfaces were able to convey a strong sense of the landscape - technical strength caught my eye.

3rd Prize (Voucher from Senior Art Supplies, donated by Menzies Auctioneers)
Elizabeth Banfield
'Letters 13 & 14 (Mansfield)'
This was quite an interesting object, successful. Colour and movement!

4th Prize (4 x access passes from the Firestation Print Studio)
Marjorie Imlach
'Kangaroo Island' Triptych
Soft and subtle colours and textures worked well for me, and conveyed the subject well

You can see all of the winning entries and the rest of the show in our gallery until the 14th January. We will also post some images on our website to view and / or purchase. The Summer Salon was curated by Trudy Rice.
